Conference program

This congress brings together international scholars who investigate the nexus of culture and psychology from diverse perspectives. We invite submissions of symposia, papers, and posters in all areas of culture and psychology.

The conference theme is Cultural Change: Meeting the Challenge. In the globalizing world today, cultural change is a universal phenomenon that faces all humans on the planet Earth. Nonetheless, different peoples engage with this process differently given their cultural circumstances. What are the psychological processes associated with the fast movement of information, financial resources, material goods, and people across countries, and their impact on peoples and their cultures around the globe? We strongly encourage submissions of symposia, papers, and posters that are pertinent to this general theme. Contributions related to globalization and culture identity, psychology of immigration and other forms of movements of people, and their engagement with and responses to the process of cultural change are especially welcome.

Highlights

  • Walter Lonner Distinguished Lecture: Lawrence Harrison (Tufts)

  • Keynote speakers: Alan Fiske (UCLA), Daphna Oyserman (University of Michigan), David Matsumoto (San Francisco State University) and Steven Heine (University of British Columbia).

Call for Symposia, Papers and Posters

To receive full consideration, submissions must be submitted before 1 February 2010.  All proposals received by 1 February will be reviewed and individuals will be notified of the status of their submissions by the end of February, 2010. All submissions must be in English.  Submissions will be accepted in three forms: symposia, individual papers, and poster presentations.

Conference Registration

Final acceptance will be dependent on the conference registration of all presenters’ discussants and panel members.

Refereed Abstracts

All abstract submissions are refereed by members of the Scientific Program Committee. Please note that individual presenters in symposia will not be contacted directly by the Conference Organising Group. All correspondence will be conducted through the Convenor whose responsibility it will be to keep presenters informed.

Symposium (1.5 hours)

Each symposium will consist of up to four presentations. It is expected that these presentations will be thematically linked. The symposium Convener who will also Chair the session, should forward the submission form on behalf of all the presenters, together with copies of the symposium abstracts (both overall and for each individual paper). Symposium presenters should NOT submit their own abstracts individually or separately. The submission must include the name and complete contact information for the single individual responsible for the symposium and a 250 word maximum introduction to the thematic content of the symposium and an abstract for each of the papers to be presented within the symposium.

Individual Research Paper Session (1.5 hours)

Each individual paper will consist of a 15–minute presentation plus 5 minutes for questions. The Scientific Program Committee will integrate sets of individual papers into thematic sessions of one and a half hours’ duration. The submission must include the name and complete contact information for the individual responsible for the paper and a 250 word maximum abstract.

Poster Presentation (1.5 hr)

Poster presentations provide an opportunity for presenters and participants to interact in a less formal environment than that provided by papers or symposia. Posters will be available for a period of time during the conference, in thematically linked sessions. Presenters are required to be present at their poster display in order to discuss their findings with interested delegates at the time scheduled by the conference organisers. This time is likely to be during one of the smaller meal breaks.  The submission must include the name and complete contact information for the individual responsible for the poster and a 250 word maximum abstract.
