Welcome from the Conference Chairs and the President of the International Association for
Cross-Cultural Psychology

It is my great honour and privilege to invite all those interested in cross-cultural psychology, from all the scientific disciplines, to join us at the XXth International Congress of Cross Cultural Psychology in Melbourne, Australia, in July 2010. Our venue is the beautiful Melbourne University campus, which provides world-class facilities, including the opportunity for participants to live in excellent accommodation either on campus or close by in a range of hotels. Nearby is the hum of multicultural Melbourne with a host of eating establishments and local colour.

The Scientific Committee, headed by Professor Yoshi Kashima from Melbourne University, has developed an excellent programme with a difference for this conference. The first day comprises top quality workshops, included in the total conference fee, so participants have the opportunity to study specific areas in detail - a first for the Cross-Cultural Conference. Contributed symposia and papers will be of the usual excellent scientific quality that is the hallmark of this conference.

Keynote speakers will set the scene for the theme of Cultural Change - Meeting the Challenge.

We hope you will join us in Melbourne for this exciting conference as we expand our knowledge and meet with old friends and new.

Amanda Gordon FAPS
Conference Chair

Welcome to IACCP 2010! This is an exciting meeting place of diverse perspectives, intellectual traditions, and so elusive, and yet so real, existences that we call cultures. The world has experienced numerous historical events since the IACCP's Brehmen Congress in 2008. In this bewildering complexity, cultures are changing. How do we meet the challenge? This Melbourne Congress will be that magical moment when different ideas click together, new vistas open up, and ways forward begin to emerge.

Melbourne is one of the most culturally diverse cities of the world. Built by European settlers in the 19th century on the land occupied by its traditional owners, Wurundjeri, Boonwurung, and Wathaurong, it has attracted diverse peoples from around the world. At the beginning of the 21st century, Melbourne boasts a population of nearly 4 million with more than 100 languages and dialects spoken in its vicinity. With this diversity come unique exhibits in art galleries and museums, a wide variety of culinary offerings, and multicultural experiences of the highest order. It is green, safe, and vibrant. From the city centre and its art precinct, vineyards in the Yarra Valley, natural beauties of the Great Ocean Road, snow fields of the Australian Alps, and beyond, Melbourne offers a complete cultural experience.

The Congress will be held on the campus of the University of Melbourne, near to the city centre. Though relatively new by the world standard, it is one of the oldest universities in Australia with sandstone buildings and more than 150 years of history. With its modern audio-visual facilities, the conference rooms will give you all the functionalities you need to share your research with your colleagues. Your accommodation will be mostly close to this campus, varying from four or five star hotels to college accommodation suitable for graduate students; numerous cafes and coffee shops around and on the campus enable you to enjoy friendly exchanges of ideas and insights with other conference delegates; and the entire environment is conducive to exciting intellectual experiences.

See you in Melbourne for IACCP 2010!

The International Association for Cross Cultural Psychology was founded in 1972. IACCP has expanded as a scientific organization since then and has now a membership of over 900 individuals. With an increasing interest in cross cultural, cultural and indigenous psychologies, IACCP wants to further the advancement of knowledge about psychological functioning of humans in all human societies; develop and test theories about the relationships between culture and human behavior; test the generalizability of theories from all branches of psychology and related disciplines in all human societies.

IACCP also wants to encourage the incorporation of the knowledge and expertise gained by cross‑cultural, cultural and indigenous psychologies into the main body of psychology and develop and promote the application of psychological knowledge to social phenomena and problems in all countries.

Last but not least IACCP wants to facilitate communication and cooperation among scholars who study the relationships between culture and human behavior and serve as a fertile ground for communication, discussion and social encounters in general.

Regional and international conferences are the main places for cross overs of information, of developing visions and making friends all over the globe. However, we are not only adressing friends and members of our association, but equally welcome colleagues and students of other disciplines and backgrounds who share with us the committment for understanding the role of culture for human behavior and thoughts and their development.

With this short statement I would like to invite you to join our next international congress in Melbourne, Australia from 7–10 July. It is the XXth IACCP international congress and stands in the tradition of a series of unique and memorable events. All our congresses aim at the presentation of high scientific quality, providing an avenue for meetings and communication, but also the presentation of the genius loci where the congress is being held with all the local flavor and the local culture. We are all excited to come to Melbourne and experience an extraordinary series of invited events, symposia, lectures, posters and other formats. Amanda Gordon, Australian Psychological Society (Congress chair) and Professor Yoshihisa Kashima, University of Melbourne (Congress Scientific chair) promise to continue the IACCP congress tradition of excellence - as well as opening up visions for new directions. We hope that many of you will join us and contribute to a stimulating, exciting, rewarding and thought provoking congress.
